Owen injury, not a problem!

SAF: Owen fears allayed

Michael Owen's groin injury is not as severe as first feared, Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed.

The 29-year-old striker limped out of Wednesday's win over Wolfsburg with a tight groin, and the United manager revealed post-match that Owen could miss three weeks of action.

However, the boss allayed those fears at his pre-Sunderland press conference on Friday morning.

"It's not as bad as we first thought," he said. "There was precaution attached to it, and he should be available next week.

"He missed training (before Wolfsburg) and we maybe should have left him out. But we wanted him to play and he wanted to play.

"He'll be fit for Bolton (on October 17), and we're pleased with that. On Michael’s part, it was precaution, which is understandable given his history."

Sir Alex also revealed that goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is "not far away" from a return to playing, while full-back Rafael is "training well."

"We've a strong squad," said the boss. "The problem with having everyone fit is picking the right team."
